Long washed denim skirt with a frayed hem

A long skirt in cotton denim, cut in an A-line. The high waist sits in the hollow of the waist, the cut stays fitted over the hips then flares openly down to the ankle. The graded wash, lighter at the front, gives the piece a worn look that avoids an over-crisp newness.

The cut

The denim is not stretch: it holds the silhouette at the waist and hips, without clinging. The flare completely frees your stride, despite the length. The drape is heavy — the skirt keeps its volume instead of flattening against the legs.

How to wear it

Its high waist calls for tucked-in tops: a white T-shirt in thick cotton, a knotted shirt, a fine ribbed knit. Cropped tops work too — the skirt's length rebalances the whole. On your feet, low-heeled ankle boots if you want to take up the length, low trainers or flat sandals for a more casual look. A leather jacket or a trench over the top in mid-season.

The length runs from 89 cm in XS to 94 cm in 2XL. On a height of about 1.70 m, the skirt comes to the ankle. Shorter than that, it will skim the floor: hemming by a tailor remains possible, but it will do away with the original fringe.

Fabric and care

Composition: Woven denim, main composition cotton (content between 50% and 70%), completed by synthetic fibres for hold. Non-stretch fabric. Lining: none.

Care: Machine wash at 30 °C, inside out, normal cycle. Wash the skirt separately for the first few times: washed denims may bleed. No bleach. Air dry, flat or on a hanger; no tumble dryer, which would shrink the cotton. Medium ironing on the reverse if necessary. The raw hem loses a few threads on the first wash then settles: that is the principle of the finish, and it should not be cut off.

Measurements taken flat, tolerance of 1 to 3 cm. XS: waist 60 cm, hips 96 cm, length 89 cm. S: waist 64 cm, hips 98 cm, length 90 cm. M: waist 68 cm, hips 102 cm, length 91 cm. L: waist 72 cm, hips 106 cm, length 92 cm. XL: waist 76 cm, hips 110 cm, length 93 cm. 2XL: waist 80 cm, hips 114 cm, length 94 cm. The denim does not stretch: go first by your waist measurement. If you are between two sizes, or if you have a marked difference between waist and hips, take the size up.

Good to know

• I am 1.60 m — will the skirt trail on the ground? In XS it measures 89 cm long and will come to the instep, or even to the floor with flat shoes. Worn with an ankle boot or a low-heeled sandal, the length falls just right. Otherwise, shortening by a tailor is straightforward, but it will remove the original frayed hem.
• As the denim is not stretch, is it comfortable to wear for long? The waist is fitted but the cut flares from the hips: there is no tension on the thighs or the knees. You walk, climb stairs and sit down without constraint. The only point to check is your waist measurement, which is why it is worth measuring before ordering.
• Will the frayed hem come apart over time? No. The cut is clean and the fringe settles after one or two washes, once the shortest threads have gone. Simply avoid the tumble dryer, which speeds up fraying, and wash the skirt inside out.
