Long A-line polka dot skirt

A long high-waisted skirt, very flared, in an opaque fabric with oversized polka dots for a clean movement.

This skirt plays on a single idea: fullness. The A-line starts from a straight high waistband and opens out clearly to below the calf. The fullness does not come from simply widening the pattern but from flat pleats spread from the waist: the skirt stays flat over the top of the hips, then unfolds as you walk.

The fabric is a woven polyester, opaque, with a lightly structured hold. It falls without clinging to the legs and keeps the shape of the pleats from one wear to the next. The large-scale polka dot print, irregularly placed, gives the piece its graphic side: it is what makes the garment, the rest stays sober.

How to wear it

At the office, with a fitted top tucked into the waistband and court shoes or loafers: the high waist defines the silhouette and the length stays covering. At the weekend, a plain T-shirt and white trainers are enough — the skirt carries the outfit. At the start of the season, add a fine knit and a short jacket so the line at the waist is not broken.

A note on proportion: keep the top cropped or tucked in. A long top would hide the waistband and the buttons, which are the two visual anchors of the piece.

What to know

The polyester creases barely at all: it is a skirt that copes with the car, the train and a day spent seated. In return, the material breathes less than a viscose: in high heat, prefer a cotton top. The front button placket is decorative on the lower part; the opening is at the top of the placket.

Fabric and care

Composition: 90 to 95% polyester, completed with elastomeric and technical fibres for the hold of the pleat. Opaque fabric, unlined, with a waistband finished by a clean seam.

Care: Machine wash at 30 °C, delicate programme, inside out to preserve the print. No bleach. Short spin, dry on a hanger: the skirt takes its shape back on its own and the pleats fall into place. Drum drying is not advised. Iron with a gentle iron if needed, on the reverse, without dwelling on the buttons.

Size

A cut true to usual sizes. The measurement that counts is the waist, as the skirt is flared over the hips. Guidance: S 64-68 cm waist, M 68-72 cm, L 72-78 cm, XL 78-84 cm, 2XL 84-90 cm. Length of about 88 cm from the waistband, that is a below-the-calf length on a height of 1.68 m; expect longer if you are under 1.60 m. If you hesitate between two sizes, take the larger: the waistband is straight and has no elastic.

Good to know

• Does polyester last? That is precisely its strong point on this kind of skirt: the fibre does not lose shape in the wash, keeps its pleats and creases barely at all. Its drawback is breathability, lower than a natural fibre. In high heat, pair it with a cotton or linen top.
• Is the skirt see-through? No. The fabric is opaque and holds its shape, with no lining needed. You can wear it in full light without an underskirt.
• A very flared skirt — does it add bulk to the silhouette? The fullness starts below the waistband, not at the waist: the top stays flat thanks to the flat pleats, and the flare develops towards the bottom. It is that contrast of a defined waist and a full bottom that lengthens the line. Keep the top tucked in to preserve it.
