Long patchwork denim coat with a removable hood

A denim coat, long below the knee, assembled as patchwork, with a removable corduroy hood.

A long outer piece, cut from medium-weight cotton denim. The length exceeds 100 cm: it covers the thighs and falls below the knee, which is still rare on a denim garment. The line is straight, not fitted, with dropped shoulders and classic long sleeves.

The front and the pockets carry checked panels assembled as patchwork. The wash of the denim is deliberately uneven: from one piece to another, the placement of the fabrics and the intensity of the blue or gray vary slightly. That is the principle of patchwork construction, not a fault.

What the cut brings

The roomy volume lets a thick sweater through without pulling at the armholes. The seams at the waist and at the back structure the drape to avoid a shapeless look, and the low side vents free your stride despite the length. The straight cut suits apple, pear and rectangle builds well: nothing marks the waist, everything falls plumb from the shoulders.

How to wear it

It is a mid-season coat, to wear open over straight-leg jeans and ankle boots, or closed over a long fluid dress to play on the contrast of materials. With the hood attached, the look is frankly workwear. Hood removed, the collar stays clean and the piece wears in a dressier way. A fine sweater or a ribbed knit underneath is enough in autumn; a thick sweater takes it into the first cold spells.

Fabric and care

Composition: Cotton denim, mainly cotton (between 50% and 70%), completed with accompanying fibers not detailed by the maker. Panels in woven checked fabric. Applied hood in corduroy. Medium thickness, unlined.

Care: Remove the hood before washing. Machine wash at 30 °C, delicate cycle, garment turned inside out. No bleach. Wash separately the first few times: dark denim can bleed. Air dry, flat or on a wide hanger to preserve the shoulder line; avoid the tumble dryer. Iron at medium temperature on the reverse, avoiding the corduroy panels. Dry cleaning is possible.

Size

One size, designed as an oversized volume. The piece generally corresponds to a size S to XL depending on the fullness you want: on a smaller size it gives a very enveloping silhouette, on a larger one a straighter drape. Total length over 100 cm, that is below the knee for a height of 1.65 m to 1.70 m. Long sleeves of classic cut: if you are under 1.60 m, you may want a slight turn-back at the wrist. If in doubt about the drape, compare the length with a long coat you already own, measured flat from the shoulder seam to the hem.

Good to know

• Can one size really fit me? The cut is deliberately very roomy and not fitted: nothing pulls at the waist or the hips. It is mainly your height and the fullness you like that make the difference. On a small frame, the piece will fall lower and more enveloping; on a taller one, the line will be straighter. See the size guide before ordering.
• Doesn't patchwork make the seams fragile? The panels are assembled then held by visible tonal topstitching, the technique used on workwear. The medium-weight denim gives the whole thing hold. As with any cotton garment, washing at 30 °C and air drying markedly extends the life of the seams.
• Is it warm enough for winter? The coat is unlined: it is a mid-season piece. The medium-weight denim cuts the wind well and the length protects the thighs, which makes it comfortable in autumn and spring. For colder days, it works with a heavy knit or a wool cardigan underneath.
